Foliage Pictures

As gardeners mature they appreciate the foliage of their plants. Leaf shape and colour, and contrasting textures in small groupings of plants become as interesting as the colour and form of flowers. I grow many plants only for their foliage, and I enjoy variegated forms. In a large garden there is room for spots and stripes, blotches and speckles.

Variegated Wallflower... Thu 6th Oct 2005 Picture (*px / 10kb): Variegated foliage can be soft and subtle - as this short lived perennial wallflower shows. The purple flowers in spring are a bonus.
Autumn Hydrangea and Fern... Mon 12th Apr 2004 Picture (1264*940px / 299kb): As the hydrangea flowers change colour in the Autumn, the ferns underneath are at their fresh green best.

Hostas with Heuchera... Sat 1st Nov 2003 Picture (1024*768px / 178kb): This grouping of foliage plants was photographed in spring, when the hosta leaves were fresh and unmarked.
Flax with Mexican Orange Blossom... Sat 1st Nov 2003 Picture (1024*768px / 155kb): This pair of neighbouring plants emphasises sunshine and brightness. The flax is a Yellow Wave, and the Choisya is the yellow leaved Sundance variety.
Dwarf Agapanthus Leaves... Sun 15th Jun 2003 Picture (1024*768px / 108kb): These are dwarf blue agapanthuses which never get to flower, as they are in the shade of the hosta garden. I keep them there though for their clean green strappy leaves.

Variegated Sedum... Fri 19th Jan 2001 Picture (1024*768px / 103kb): This is an easy care plant which I like to plant almost at the edge of borders, allowing it to flop over and be noticed.
Sedum Embrace... Sat 13th Jan 2001 Picture (1024*768px / 120kb): This is a photo of two sedum friends who live in adjacent pots on the house patio. The honey coloured one is called Sedum Adolphii.
Common Sage Leaves... Wed 10th Jan 2001 Picture (1024*768px / 121kb): I use the common purple sage as a foliage plant, and take cuttings each autumn for fresh plants.
