Red Flax and Fern

What a beautiful colour combination this is - the red of the small weeping flax, and the clear mid-green of the water-side fern. These two foliage plants sit together at the beginning of the path through Middle Garden.

A small weeping red flax hybrid.
Red Flax and Fern - 2004

The path gets quite slippery when flax leaves fall over it - as usual I have planted things far too close for comfort. The ferns have always been here by the water - there are many large clumps of them on the bank of the water race.

Middle Border's paths are edged with stones in an attempt to impose order. This is an early photograph, in which the path is visible.

This is the reddest small flax in the garden.
Red Flax - 1999

There has been significant growth all around since this archive photograqph was taken. The red flax continues to be much admired and photographed.
