Claire Rose

Claire Roses

Claire Rose has had me puzzled for some years. I thought she was the fluffy pink rose growing near my glass-house. In my memories she was an early bred David Austin English rose. But then I wondered if I'd made it all up...

AUSlight?

Finally I've found two very good reasons for my confusion. Firstly I've corrected her spelling. Quite important, this!

And, secondly, I've looked to a more formal identification. And yes, Claire Rose is definitely the pink rose growing in my garden. Her trade name (or breeder code/cultivar name) is AUSlight, and she's named for David Austin's daughter.

Or AUSprior?

But there's also a rose called Claire Austin, and she's quite different. Her trade name (or breeder code/cultivar name) is AUSprior and she's a creamy white climber. Again she's named for David Austin's daughter Claire.

So you can see how easy it's been to get these two mixed up. And both have been available at my local rose nursery.

Claire rose is the prettiest pink, and somehow survives and flowers in quite a shady spot. Welcome, Claire, AKA unknown pink fluffy!
