Pink Modern Shrub Rose
I've finally organised my collection of modern roses! They are a beautiful mixture of shrub roses, hybrid teas, rugosas, and hybrid musks - some are once-flowering, while others repeat.
For their placement I've checked in with my big rose book - I'm surprised at some of the roses classified as 'modern', but my big book knows best. Some of the roses in this section are semi-climbers, too.
I expect there may be a rose or two in here which is wrongly named - as a gardener I require a natural ambience, and so all rose labels are usually removed. I start off by remembering the names well, but with the passing of the years...
The Moosey garden does not have many hybrid tea roses, nor does it have many standard roses. I have to admit to preferring shrubs with clusters of flowers - some of the hybrid teas seem far too big and stiff. But this is purely personal.
And the garden is really too expansive for any of the newer patio roses and miniatures. I am a fan of the low growing Flower Carpet roses, though.
My favourite type of modern shrub rose would be the hybrid musks. You'll find a few of these in my rose pages. And the modern shrub roses bred by David Austin have their own page.
I hope you enjoy looking at my rose photographs. Discovering (finally) the close-up button on my digital camera has helped!
Apricot Scentasia Rose...
Mon 28th May 2007- My first patio rose! Yippee! I found the little rose called Apricot Scentasia in the Easter nursery sale - so naturally I bought two. I thought the colour would compliment the patch of dark coloured Ajuga in the Birthday Rose Garden.
Burgundy Iceberg Rose...
Sun 1st Apr 2007- My Burgundy Iceberg roses are some of my latest treasures to be planted in the Moosey Garden. This rose came with great expectations, and its colour is stunning.
Blushing Pink Iceberg Rose...
Wed 31st Jan 2007- I'm always nervous when I buy standard roses. I feel I should have serious garden-design intent - possibly even a plan! Oops. Three Blushing Pink Iceberg standard roses have recently randomly joined the Moosey rose garden.
Rhapsody in Blue...
Thu 30th Nov 2006- Sometimes new roses are ordered from specialist catalogues. Other times they may be bare rooted bargains, scooped up in the supermarket. The nicest new roses are those introduced by a gardening friend. So it is with Rhapsody in Blue.
Raspberry Ice Rose...
Sun 9th Apr 2006- One of my newest roses to flower, snug and safe at the back of the Willow tree garden, is the lovely cluster flowered floribunda Raspberry Ice. I just love it!
Picasso Rose...
Mon 9th Jan 2006- As a garden sentimentalist, I knew I needed a suitable striped rose companion for Claude Monet. Here, then, is his smaller friend, the red 'hand-painted' rose Picasso.
Jacqueline Du Pre Rose...
Thu 5th Jan 2006- This white shrub rose is named for the great musician Jacqueline du Pre. It's one of my new roses flowering for their first summer in the Birthday Rose Garden.
Claude Monet Rose...
Mon 2nd Jan 2006- One of my latest rose plans is to start a collection of modern striped roses. Another idea for a collection is to get each of the roses named after famous painters. With the rose Claude Monet I can get two for the price of one!
Kronenburg Rose...
Sat 24th Dec 2005- The hybrid tea rose Kronenburg must be unpopular, since neither of my big, serious rose books list it. A sport of the popular and desirable Peace, Kronenburg has a similar growth habit, though its strong red and yellow colours are hardly peaceful.
Royden Rose...
Fri 9th Dec 2005- Royden is one of the new roses I chose for the Birthday Garden - my sneaky birthday present to daughter, where I spent lots of money on heaps of roses, pretended it was a real birthday present, and felt completely justified - generous, even!
Old Master...
Sun 8th May 2005- My first Old Master was a standard rose I bought for five dollars from a sale at a local Crematorium. One of Sam McGredy's hand painted roses, it looked superb in Middle Border surrounded by self sown white and lime green nicotianas.
Nancy Steen...
Wed 9th Mar 2005- Nancy Steen was a New Zealand rosarian, and this rose is named after her. It's one of the few roses I brought here from my last garden, specifically because of the New Zealand rose connection.
Rosy Cushion Rose...
Wed 9th Mar 2005- Rosy Cushion is a strong shrub rose with quite stiff stems. My big rose book puzzles me, though - it seems to be describing a slightly different rose, both in form and flower colour. Perhaps it's just a trick of the strong, warm New Zealand sunlight!
The Fairy Rose...
Sun 13th Feb 2005- I talk about The Fairy rose all the time - yet up until now I've never bothered to take photographs! This beautiful soft pink rose is certainly taken for granted in my summer garden.
Ballerina Rose...
Thu 30th Dec 2004- Ballerina is a lovely shrub rose with small pink and white flowers. It strikes really easily from cuttings - Ballerina roses grown on their own roots are strong and healthy.
Penelope Rose...
Tue 28th Dec 2004- Penelope is another of the lovely hybrid musk roses in the Moosey rose garden. She's like an old lady, sprawling sideways quite a lot - my big rose book describes this more delicately as 'arching'.
Class Act Rose...
Thu 23rd Dec 2004- Class Act is a modern semi-single creamy white rose whose shrub has quite an angular growth habit. Well, the rose with the label Class Act growing in my garden is.
Flower Carpet Roses...
Wed 22nd Dec 2004- Flower Carpet Roses are probably the most widely grown set of roses in New Zealand. The bright pink variety (shunned by rose connoisseurs) is vibrant in colour and fills in the rose-flowering gap in my garden.
Pink Iceberg Rose...
Tue 21st Dec 2004- The label on this rose clearly states Pink Iceberg - I assume that this is the proper name. Pink Iceberg has been brilliant - the colour is such an unusual pink, and its habit and flowering times are exactly the same as white Iceberg.
Sexy Rexy Rose...
Thu 16th Dec 2004- This New Zealand bred rose has a too-cute name, though its alternative name of Heckenzauber (if my big rose book is to be believed) isn't nearly so memorable. Sexy Rexy is a subtle creamy pink colour, and flowers for weeks and weeks.
Sally Holmes Rose...
Thu 16th Dec 2004- Sally Holmes is a great country garden shrub rose - she's quite tall, very healthy, and has a beautiful assortment of open pale creamy flowers and tight pointy soft-apricot buds.
Yellow Agnes Rugosa Rosa...
Tue 30th Nov 2004- This is the well known yellow rugosa rose Agnes. It is one of the first to flower in the garden near the glass-house, and the soft amber lemon flowers look beautiful against its strong green rugosa foliage.
Iceberg Rose...
Thu 25th Nov 2004- Iceberg! Possibly the most popular, well-known (and well-grown) white rose of all time! Finally my Iceberg roses get the mention they deserve.
Colourbreak Rose...
Thu 25th Nov 2004- Every now and then a new rose appears whose colour is just that little bit exciting - and different. This is certainly the case with the tawny rusty red rose Colourbreak.
Prosperity Rose...
Wed 24th Nov 2004- Prosperity is a hybrid musk white rose which I love. Other more famous New Zealand gardeners agree with me - Prosperity should be as popular as the ubiquitous white Iceberg.
Friesia Rose...
Wed 24th Nov 2004- Forget the soft butter and egg yolk yellows of the David Austin roses. Friesia is bright and strong - a yellow that stands out in the summer rose garden.
Buff Beauty Hybrid Musk...
Tue 23rd Nov 2004- This is the renowned hybrid musk rose, Buff Beauty. I became interested in this family of roses early on, as they seemed ideal no-nonsense country roses. I wondered if Buff Beauty might look lost and washed out in my garden. I was wrong!
Sparrieshoop...
Mon 22nd Nov 2004- I have two Sparrieshoop roses - the well known single pink, and a single white. They both climb in and over the Pittosporum trees in the Septic Tank Garden.
Fruhlingsmorgen Rose...
Sun 7th Nov 2004- Fruhlingsmorgen is another once-flowering rose I grow in the Moosey garden. It is bred by Kordes - hence the German name. This rose reminds me of a delicate sunrise, and I love the way it drapes itself over neighbouring plants.
Fruhlingsgold Rose...
Sat 6th Nov 2004- The late spring flowering rose Fruhlingsgold is delicately fragrant, and its scent always surprises me. It is a big tree climbing rose, needing a lot of space to stretch out in.
Canary Bird Rose...
Thu 28th Oct 2004- Every spring the species rose Canary Bird is the first Moosey rose to come into flower. It has a gentle spreading habit, and flowers at exactly the same time as the nearby cherry trees and the climbing Clematis Montana.
Robusta Rugosa Rose...
Thu 21st Dec 2000- Robusta is a modern rugosa hybrid which has crimson red single flowers. Its name describes it perfectly. Robusta is very thorny and extremely vigorous. I think it would make a great rose hedge.
White Astrid Rose...
Sat 4th Mar 2000- This is my name for this rose, which I think is a recently bred one. My dearest gardening friend Astrid sent it out here for a peaceful retirement. It is on its own in a bed of older shrubs, and the dark foliage and beautifully formed flowers are stunning.
Lavender Lassie...
Thu 27th Jan 2000- This rose was retired here from a friend's garden, and she claims it is a Lavender Lassie. I planted it to spread over the wires between the pergola posts. The flowers were quite spectacular, in big clusters of blooms which are more pink in colour than lavender.
